comentstimeoutwordpressplugin.jpgThe vast majority of spam which gets through the superb Akismet spam protection, finds its way to older posts, particularly those which get low levels of traffic. If a post is not receiving a regular supply of visitor comments, there is little reason to continue to provide an open comment form on older posts. Wordpress has no inbuilt comment/post management apart from re-editing every post and diabling comments individually.

Comments Timeout is a superb plugin which manages comment forms based on a number of definable criteria. The administration settings allow a defined timeout based on the number of days from the post’s published date. In addition, you can define a separate timeout for posts defined as popular - i.e. posts with over a definable number of approved comments.

Since installing this plugin, and with the standard Akismet plugin running, I have not had to delete a single spam comment.
