A great opportunity ahead

Time is running out… it’s under a month away now.

PodcastCon UK, sponsored by be, the UK’s first 24Mbit broadband provider, takes place on 17th September in London. It will be the first totally podcast-focused convention in Europe. Put together by a group of enthusiastic participants in the UK podcasting scene, the convention is attracting increasing global interest in this little island’s growing podcast community. Broadcast professionals from the BBC and Virgin as well as key UK podcasting personalities are contributing to what is hoped will be the first of many future podcasting events in the UK.

OK, that’s the sales pitch, now what about my bit…

I’ve had minor involvement in the small team putting this event together creating some branding to secure the be sponsorship and developing other media elements for promotion, but my main contribution comes on the day: I get to Master of Ceremonies (MC) the whole event! That basically means filling the gaps between speakers, introducing the next item and generally being up there, in front of an audience for much of the day. It’s going to be a challenge.

The day itself will be fine, I have total confidence I can pull it off. It will be the prep that will be the biggest challenge as I have to create enough material to fill my on stage time yet have it flexible enough to absorb timing problems with speakers overrunning and potentially messing with the schedule. Thankfully with work being so good in recent weeks, taking a week out to focus on this will be perfectly possible.

Some of the stuff I create will likely be published here after the event.

New internet service provider Be (www.BeThere.co.uk) , the UK’s first to launch broadband download speeds of up to 24 megs, has confirmed it will sponsor PodcastCon UK 2005 (www.podcastcon.co.uk), the first conference in Europe dedicated exclusively to podcasting , one of the fastest growing online phenomena of the last 12 months.

PodcastCon UK 2005 will take place on Saturday 17 September at the Berners Hotel in central London and will line-up a series of influential speakers including: Chris Kimber, head of radio interactive at the BBC, James Cridland, head of strategic development at Virgin Radio, Neville Hobson of For Immediate Release and international award-winning podcaster, Richard Vobes.

The conference will also provide a valuable opportunity for the UK’s burgeoning community of podcast producers, listeners and anyone with an interest in this rapidly growing form of new media to take part in interactive discussions on issues that will affect the development of podcasting as it enters its second year.

Dana Pressman, Managing Director of Be, said: “At Be we believe that actions speak louder than words. That’s why we’re sponsoring PodcastCon UK 2005, which is set to capture the excitement, passion and potential of podcasting. We’re also passionate about delivering the fastest broadband speeds possible, enabling new technologies and trends, such as podcasting, to become more accessible.”

Paul Nicholls, Birmingham-based lawyer and chief organiser of PodcastCon UK 2005, said: “To have Be on board is great news for the conference and great news for podcasting. Their service and their passion for what they are doing fits so well with podcasting and the increasingly large community of listeners and producers in the UK and beyond. There’ll be a real buzz of excitement at the conference which I’m sure will be both informative and lots of fun.”
