My prior experience of accountants were of people who fixed problems I didn’t know existed in a manner I didn’t understand. Then sent me the invoice.
But today, having left things till the last minute, as is typical for creatively-oriented types, I finally looked through my accountant-prepared tax return to find exactly how much tax I owe Mr. Brown for the last financial year:
Woohoo! A grand total of £1.10.
Looks like these number crunchers are actually doing what I pay them to - particularly welcome in the usual January cash-flow bottleneck.

Is it a new accountant? In my experience when you change accountants, the first returns are always great (small amount to pay, maybe even rebates) - then they get you back in the subsequent years!

Hi Ian, I’ve been with them a couple of years now but never managed to get organised enough to get my personal tax return to them in time… the completion of my personal return is all in with the cost of my business accounts. Yummie!

I have been freelancing since Sept and don’t have an accountant yet! I have been keeping all my records and receipts, but I don’t know how much to expect to hand over to an accountant.. can anyone recommend one?

If you are in the UK, have a chat with SJD Accountancy, good value for money and a great service over all. Outside of the UK.. dunno!
