All that stuff about the danger of mediocrity and UGC really struck a note with me and what I’m doing at youtubepoop.com. There is no right and wrong of course, it’s all shades of gray, however I’ve found that a kind a turnstyle system helps a lot - that is to say rather than just allowing any old thing to be added to the site it is curated and I make beginners jump through a couple of hoops in order to weed out as many freeloaders as possible. This gets me all kind of complaints from veteran artists complaining I’ve made it too easy to beginners saying it’s too elitist. The solution I think is fluidity - like a valve system, but this means you have cultivate a culture of constant change to keep people on their toes.

Filtering = friction, that is inevitable. But I understand your motivation, and in the end some filtering should help the cream to float to the top.
