Following on from my last post below I’ve decided not to take part in Nanowrimo this year. Carefully considered reasons are twofold:
Firstly, as I’m 30k+ words into the first draft of Table Rappers Book 1, written over the past couple of months, I don’t have any motivational issues preventing me writing which the nanowrimo deadline might help overcome. Not enough time to write as much as I’d like - that’s a whole new can o’ worms.
Secondly, I am able to write around 700 words of Table Rappers 1 per hour of effort on average. That means 50k words (the nanowrimo requirement) would take me around 70 hours. A tall order in a working month, though not impossible. But if I am going to devote that kind of time to writing, it would be far more productive devoting it to the second draft of Table Rappers 1, as I should almost certainly have the first draft complete by the end of October.
Who knows, maybe next year. If you are considering it, or have always wanted to get a book written but never really found the time (that’s all in the mind, anyway, you know), then I urge you to consider nanowrimo to give you that extra little push. I cannot express the sense of achievement every time I open my notebook and see just how many pages I have covered with words in the past couple of months. The first book feels a very real possibility now.
