Nokia E61i with iSync on Mac OSX 10.4.x

I’m very happy with my Nokia E61i, but have been struggling to get it synchronised with my mac for a couple of weeks. It seems that since OSX 10.4.9, E61 synchronisation is out of the box, but still not E61i.
Some searching produced instructions here at MacOSXHints.com which means manually editing the iSync data files, and tweaking an icon - all pretty straightforward.

This is a three-stage process:
- Locate iSync on your Applications folder:
(Control-click and choose Show Package Contents) and navigate to:
Contents » Plugins » ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice » Contents » Plugins »
Nokia-E61.phoneplugin » Contents » Resources
- Copy the section of code (in red) from the MacOSXHints page and using a text editor (I used BBEdit), open up MetaClasses.plist from the above folder, pasting the copied code segment near the bottom, just before the final </dict>
- You’ll also need an icon for the E61i - so that it appears accurately in iSync’s toolbar once you have added the device. I have created one here - it’s a .tiff so control/right click to download the image. This needs to be placed in the same location as the MetaClasses.plist file mentioned above - you’ll see the existing image for the E61 that folder already (com.nokia.E61.tiff).
Done. Now open iSync and add your E61i as a device (make sure bluetooth is on and the phone is discoverable). My first sync appeared to go just fine, and it was much faster than with my old SonyEricsson phones.
One additional note, there are two versions of the E61i: the E61i-1 and E61i-2. If the above technique initially fails to sync, try editing the MetaClasses.plist file once more, changing all references for E61i-2 into E61i-1.

So Adam’s enthusiasm for the E61i got to you then?
I’m still deciding on iPhone or iPod Touch and my existing 6230. Decisions, decisions…

A case of absolutely avoiding the default Blackberry, and not wanting anything with a retarded windows system - selection gets a little slim after that - but yes, AC’s recommendation was a factor.

Not sure what you want to sync exactly Neil, but if it’s iTunes related, SyncTunes for Mac works a treat …

@adrian: Ooh, now that’s worth a play, thank you.
My main aim was to keep calendar and contacts all synched up, gonna play with this though.

Also note that for those averse to plist editing, you can simply download an iSync config for OS/X from Nokia:

They also have a few other toys like Nokia Multimedia Sync, which is handy although still a work in progress.
One frustrating omission is that a separate plugin would be required to support dialing and sms from the address book app and Nokia has not provided this.
Cheers and enjoy the phone!

I just used the Nokia download on my work MacBook Pro and it went perfectly. Much more straightforward than fiddling manually editing stuff.

Totally brilliant - thanks for sharing this. I had to use the fix in the additional note at the foot of the instructions but it all works fine now - Thank You
