Our flat has light coloured carpets. That’s just plain daft. So the (part) solution is to have a whole range of rugs around the place to effectively cover up the main traffic areas.
Problem One: they move.
The amount of times each day we have to reposition the hallway rugs is getting to the point of nervous twitch – we hardly even notice we are doing it any more. But it’s the rate of movement that bugs me, two or three passes over a rug, and it’s all crumpled against the wall. OK, so I’m assuming jEN is not spending hours every day walking up and down the rugs when I’m not looking.
Problem Two: the vacuum wants to eat them.
There’s too much suck – ahem – for anything that isn’t superglued/nailed/threatened-with-immediate-death-if-it-moves to an inanimate object such as the building superstructure, for proper vacuuming to take place. So we did buy a vacuum which has a very controllable power slider thingy. However, despite what is an apparent cool slider control, what you end up with is effectively three settings:
So, I have a solution to both these problems: Rugs as big as the room.
Big rugs will not move around when we walk on them because they have nowhere to go, they already fill up all the available space. Big area rugs won’t shift around when hoovering because lots of heavy furniture will be sat on them holding them down. Now, aren’t I the clever problem solving monkey today*.
So what I need, because they are gonna be humongous, are some cheap rugs.
*I am actually, because at the weekend I turned the vacuum from a suck-less lump of bag-less plastic bits, into a usable device which ended up giving me a great upper body workout (by using it to vacuum, not by fighting it with a sharpened stick, before you ask). Next time I’ll read the instructions which tell you to clean the filter out.
What you need is a rug gripper!
heh
Try using strips of broad velcro on the backs of the rugs?
Assuming they aren’t really valuble ones, sewing (which is a pain to do) 6″ x 2″ strips at each corner reduces movement, though its effectiveness depends on the pile of the carpet below.

We have just put laminate down in our hall so no more rug/vacuum issues there although I fear I may be consumed by mopping issues before long
