Minor Technicality Episode 43 – Contractual obligations

I don’t have music in me, so there’s none in this show. Halloween is coming up, and the plans for a special spooky audio story. New Brit sketch comedy from Harry and Paul – what a relief!

Self-imposed boundaries

Self-imposed boundaries

There are enough obstacles in life’s path waiting to trip us up every day, so why do we tend to create more of them to potentially thwart our progress?
It seems to be human nature that we find reasons why something which involves effort cannot be immediately accomplished, and in-built, instinctive inertia for implementing change. The [...]

Podcast ads 3 : pay to download 0 – NMA

News | Consumers unwilling to pay for podcasts – NMA
Yet another survey confirming that pay-to-download podcast services may be focusing on the minoity audience. These results are pretty much aligned with other surveys done earlier this year in both the US and Canada and should be carefully considered by anyone deciding how to monetise their [...]

Don’t ban them, swap them out with sillyness

Anyone running an online forum will at some point need to decide how to handle the posting of expletives. In an open, public forum, where anyone can view the posts, this is essential to ensure none of your visitors end up in potentially sticky situations (not of the porn-variety of course) at work or at [...]

Easing the money in

Easing the money in

Last month, however, just after the official 30 days’ payment had passed, I popped a pleasant letter in the post asking for the account to be brought up to date…. So with the payment date of the second, much larger invoice approaching last week, I though it wouldn’t hurt to stick a little reminder in, this time before the due date.

Get a load of Ewan’s stiff** for (almost) free

That crazy Scotsman of Podcasting is at it again, or at least at some mad scheme again. With the move from a house to an apartment – and the subsequent need to compensate for a severe reduction in storage space – Ewan Spence is on the (almost) giveaway.
All you need to do is Paypal him [...]

Open Source can be anything but free

Open Source can be anything but free

Despite the core application being free (open source), a significant amount of time has been spent re-engineering, tweaking and downright hacking Drupal to make it behave the way the client wants it – even then a few compromises have had to be made. The same client has now asked me to develop their external corporate website to run atop a content management system (CMS)…. The layout compromises – or the vast amount of hacking to work around them – now pointed to a bespoke solution.Open source solutions are fine for targeted niche CMS, such as Wordpress for blogs or Drupal for community based sites, but when you need to create a corporate website with a no-compromise user interface and specific operational behaviour in the back end, open source rarely fits the bill. The problem with much open source, in the CMS space, is that it generally falls into one of two categories:1.

Headset all set

Headset all set

When you first use the headset, pairing with a phone is accomplished by holding down the power button for five seconds and waiting for the phone and headset to communicate…. wherever that disappeared to.It was only tonight I discovered this after much Googling for a reason why the headset refused to pair with the new phone.
