I have an ending.
That’s step two in the development of the story. I had a vague ending when I posted my last update on the horror script development, but now I have a specific ending, a fully formed story ending and even a fully formed last scene.
One of the main reasons some of my story ideas in the past never made their way to a completed treatment or even a screenplay, was that I could not decide on an ending. Writing a screenplay without knowing where you have to end up is like popping over to see your Dad after he moved but didn’t tell you where he moved to.
How can you possibly take your protagonist on a journey through the story if you don’t know where he/she needs to end up. The remit for every scene you write must have justification for its existence by either moving the story forward or (preferably and) moving the character arc forward. If a scene does not fulfill either of those, it should not exist. And without understanding where the story is to end up, it is virtually impossible to make a clear step to that ultimate goal each scene.
I know you want to know the ending, but I’m not spitting it out here, other than to say all is back to normal… or is it?
Now all I need is to find an additional 6 hours a day in which I can be awake and coherent enough to write, and I’ve a chance of meeting the deadline. Not much to ask, is it.
