Twitter fiction: how a writer like Scott Sigler does it

Scott Sigler, the author who roared to success with his podcast novel then printed novels Ancestor and Earthcore, had a little dabble in Twitterfiction yesterday, creating a story around the iPhone release.

Scott’s tweets started with: “ I just cut in line at the Apple Store. Geek fight ensued…” and rapidly developed into a bloody multi-nation war for the remaining iPhones. The level of escalation might have been absurd, but as a developing story, I think it worked.

You can follow Scott’s Twitter fiction at http://twitter.com/scottsigler, though depending on when you read this post you may need to go back though his older tweets until you come upon the quote above.

Although this was a single viewpoint, in contrast to the multi-character/viewpoint story I have been attempting to develop (details here), it was inspiring to see how he developed and condensed the action into such tiny bites - yet still escalated the story with every tweet. Great work, Scott, and thank you for the entertainment and inspiration!

The first story went great, tried another one today, didn’t go so well - maybe with TwitterFic, it has to be something that ties into a current event that has the Twit-O-Sphere all, well, a-Twitter.

    Welcome Scott.
I think you may be right in binding it to a current event. The fickle nature of twitter users’ (and so much of internet users’) focus means they’ll need a reason to pay attention across multiple tweets, perhaps.
